1. Frame Rails & The "Rust Jacking" Phenomenon

On double-framed heavy trucks or reinforced chassis, salty moisture gets trapped between the steel plates. As rust oxidizes, it expands with immense pressure — a phenomenon known in the industry as "rust jacking." This swelling separates the steel layers, shears off rivets, and severely weakens structural rigidity under heavy loads.

2. Suspension System

Road spray directly targets U-bolts, hangers, and torque rods. On air suspensions, the metal bases of the air springs corrode, leading to slow air leaks, while the rubber bladders crack due to extreme cold and harsh chemical exposure.

3. Frame Crossmembers

Crossmembers maintain structural alignment between the two main frame rails. A cracked or heavily corroded crossmember allows the frame to twist during cornering or dumping operations. Pay extra attention to crossmembers located under the fifth wheel and right behind the cab, where road salt and debris accumulate most.

Camions Dubois Preventive Maintenance Tips

  • Frequent Undercarriage Washing: Thoroughly pressure-wash the frame and underbody after winter storms to remove salt crust buildup.

  • Heavy-Duty Anti-Corrosion Treatment: Apply a specialized oil/wax rust inhibitor formulated for commercial trucks before the winter season begins.

  • Pre-Purchase Hammer Test: When inspecting a used truck, use a mechanic's hammer to gently tap along the frame rails — a dull thud or flaking metal indicates critical material loss.
